Classes of Pesticides Used in Landscape/Nursery Pest Management

چکیده

There are many considerations when using pesticides to manage insects and mites on nursery and landscape plants. Although efficacy is obviously central for any pesticide use, there are often special problems with development of pesticide resistance among certain pests (e.g., twospotted spider mite). Conservation of natural enemies of insect and mite pests is critical to optimizing pest management and there is very low tolerance of potential adverse effects to non-target organisms such as wildlife and pets. Perhaps most often of greatest concern is that pesticide applications often take place in areas of high human traffic and may be further complicated by special issues such as chemical trespass. Ideally, pesticides used in landscape/nursery pest management would: 1) be effective for the intended management purpose; 2) pose very low hazard to humans; 3) be compatible with natural enemies of pest insects and mites; 4) pose minimal hazard to birds, mammals and other non-target species; 5) be used in a manner that avoids drift and/or excessive environmental persistence. Pesticides that combine most of these feature are sometimes referred to as biorational pesticides.

Using aesthetic assessments of azalea lace bug (Heteroptera: Tingidae) feeding injury to provide thresholds for pest management decisions.

Research on consumer, grower, and landscape manager perception of azalea lace bug, Stephanitis pyrioides (Scott), feeding and on plant productivity parameters, including gas exchange and growth, has increased our understanding of the nature of feeding injury. These studies made it possible to develop decision-making guidelines for cost-effective maintenance of aesthetically pleasing azaleas. Cr...

Abundance of Beneficial Arthropods on Woody Landscape Plants at Professionally-Managed Landscape Sites1

Eight 0.2–0.4 ha (0.5–1.0 A) sites managed by landscape professionals were monitored biweekly for beneficial arthropod activity. More than 30 generalist predator taxa were identified. Spiders and green lacewings were the most numerous taxa and both were found on all plant taxa sampled. Green lacewings, especially the egg stage, were the most numerous natural enemies detected on birch, crape myr...

Pest Index: A New Approach to Establishing Thresholds for Pest Management in Woody Landscape Plants1

Pest index, a new approach to categorizing the threat posed by an organism to woody plants, is proposed to assist plant managers in establishing treatment thresholds for pests of woody plants. The need for such a tool is based on the incredible diversity of pests of woody plants and the lack of experimental data establishing such thresholds. The pest index is computed using information about th...
